When you Google “Taiwanese girls,” the first automatic suggestion is “Taiwanese girls are easy.台妹好把” This search result has created a heated debate引發熱烈討論 in Taiwan. Many Taiwanese men agree with the sentiment同意這樣的觀點, saying that those Taiwanese women who like to date foreigners damage Taiwan's international image破壞台灣的國際形象. There are even blogs and discussion pages online that are filled with criticisms and horrible comments about stories of how easy it is for foreigners to pick up local women把當地的女人.
It is true that there are Taiwanese women
who are fine with dating foreigners, but as long as their relationship is consensual and legal雙方同意且合法 (adultery通姦 is
still a crime in Taiwan), these women should not be judged or called names被(以難堪的字眼)辱罵 for dating people who are not
Taiwanese nationals.非台灣國籍的人
The most important point is that people do
not have the right to criticize other people over their dating choices,
including in regard to gender就性別,
ethnicity種族
or nationality國籍. All such criticisms are actually reflections of the traditional image of Chinese women中國傳統女性形象的投射 and the
notion of inferiority卑微 that has been passed down from

As a woman grows up in an environment of
traditional Chinese culture, she is constantly being taught to follow certain morals遵循某種道德(標準)
that a Chinese man would not necessarily be to asked to follow, such as not
having sex before marriage (premarital sex) or not going through too many boyfriends不要交往太多的男友.
There are many nouns that are created to
describe or insult women who have numerous boyfriends in a short period of
time, while the nouns that are created to describe men who frequently change
their girlfriends are mostly positive. For example, a woman may be called a slut爛貨(指可隨意跟人發生關係的女性), whore娼妓 or skank性行為開放隨便的女性, while a man might be called a
player感情玩家, lothario登徒子 or simply a ladies' man情聖. (Casanova風流漢)

In traditional Chinese culture, men are
considered the masters and the breadwinners負擔生計的主子 of a family, which
gives them a higher social status較高的社會地位 in general. Therefore, Chinese men sometimes think they have the
right to control or criticize women if they do not behave in what they consider
“appropriate” ways. Even though these traditional ideas have been adjusted and modified調整與修改 in modern
society, the traditional morals傳統的道德觀 are still
like invisible binds to be used against women無形地捆綁女性.
The perceived inferiority that some
Taiwanese people have when being compared to people from the Western world can
also be a reason why Taiwanese women are criticized for dating foreigners.
Taiwan is a small place that not every Westerner is familiar with, so it is
important for Taiwanese people to be recognized internationally. This is proven
when anything that is related to Taiwan is reported in international media國際媒體, such as
Din Tai Fung, Chien-Ming Wang or even Jeremy Lin. Taiwanese media will never
miss such news.
A popular blog recently claimed that
Taiwanese women consider foreigners to be better than Taiwanese people, which
is why they prefer them as dating partners. However, it is a personal choice
for anyone to pick the person whom they want to date. Most men would prefer to
date attractive women, and they have their own standards on他們對…有自己的標準 what
defines “attractive,” but they are not judged for this tendency. Therefore,
Taiwanese women should not be called shallow膚淺 for dating foreigners.
Another issue is that Taiwanese men usually
do not criticize one another for marrying women from mainland China, Vietnam or
Thailand, even if they pay for the arrangement花錢買新娘. If there
are two different standards for men and women in this country, it will be
impossible for people to make fair judgments做出公正的評斷 for the
behavior of anyone, regardless of gender.
Everyone has the right to choose the person
they want to date depending on how they feel toward that person. People should
be encouraged when they are able to make decisions for their lives and take
responsibility for them. Most important is that criticizing Taiwanese women,
especially criticism from Taiwanese men, will do nothing to
promote a positive image of Taiwan 提倡正面的台灣形象to the rest of
the world.
