When 跟 While怎麼用總是搞不清楚，教練分五個條列解釋讓你看懂。

說真的，英文學了十幾年，有些東西還是搞不懂。

前幾天才上傳文章說明because of 跟 due to 的差別跟使用方式，昨天又有學生來信問教練，when 跟while是不是意思都一樣，兩個字可以互用？教練說，答案是Yes and No，就是有時候可以，有時候不行。為了讓大家都搞懂，教練用很簡單的條列式方法說明一下，幫大家複習一下。

When 跟 while 的用法

1. When and while兩個字都可以使用的狀況

同時有兩個動作發生，且其中一個動作還是持續性的背景動作，這時用when 或是 while 都可以。請看下面的例句與說明：  

• When/while I was talking to the shop clerk(持續性背景動作), my phone rang.(瞬間又發生了另一個動作) 
• The lights went out (瞬間發生的另一個動作) when/while I was having supper. (持續的背景動作)
• Mr. Lee got into a nasty accident(瞬間發生的另一個動作) when/while he was driving home. (持續的背景動作)

2. 要用While的時候

兩個動作都持續在進行的時候(長動作)，要用while

• I was watering the plants while my mother was cooking supper. 
• Chloe was doing the dishes while her cat was jumping up and down. 
• Janet was dancing while her roommate Grace was playing the guitar. 

3. 要用When的時候

兩個動作都是瞬間且幾乎同時發生的時候，要用when

• He texted me when I got home. (這裡的text跟got home都是瞬間且幾乎同時發生)
• I nearly tripped over my cat when I saw him (這裡的tripped over跟saw幾乎同時發生)
• I take off my hat when I get home. (這裡的take off hat跟get home幾乎同時發生)

4.  表示某段期間的時候，還是用when 

• When I was a kid, I used to love playing baseball. 
• I lived with my grandparents for a year when I was eight years old. 

5. 當兩個動作不是同時發生，因為有時間差，所以需要交代先後順序時，用when 

• I almost fainted when my boyfriend told me that he wanted to break up with me. 
• The burgler ran away when he saw the police. 
• I cried when I heard the story.
