1. Jail 指的是實體的監獄 (it's a very physical and real place - a place of confinement)。
Jail這個字源自於拉丁文裡面的cavea,就是洞穴的意思,後來經過一些演進變化,甚至有birdcage鳥籠的意思,所以英文的Jail是真真實實拿來關犯人的監獄啊。
2. Prison不見得是實體的監獄,這個字的拉丁字原意只是囚禁的意思,所以關在哪裡都可以,不見得一定要是一個監牢。如果你覺得自己被囚禁在一段感情裡面不自由,你就是這段感情的prisoner。或許你的身體自由,但你的心靈是被禁錮的。
所以記得下面這個口訣,一輩子都不會忘記這兩個字的差別喔。

當代英文確實jail與prison通用,不過通用不代表兩個字的意思一模一樣喔。
