From NPR

Can You Spot The Fake Fragonard?
NPR
SCOTT SIMON, HOST:
I'm not sure a picture is worth a thousand words一圖勝千語. But why do some pictures
sell for millions and others that seem identical一模一樣的 go for just a few dollars? Since February, the Dulwich Picture
Gallery in South London has hung a fake 假畫among its permanent collection of 270
Old Masters. Maybe we should call it a tribute Old Master - a hand-painted, unapologetic毫無悔意或是膽怯的, stroke-for-stroke copy複製畫 of a great painting, produced at the
Meishing Oil Painting Manufacture Company - one of many art factories in
China where hundreds of artists have given their technical skills技法 - that words seems earned真是有本事來著(技法高超) - make exact oil-painted
copies of Monets莫內,
Matisses
Picassos畢卡索 and
The Gallery invited visitors to detect找出the knock-off 假貨appearing among masterpieces.
Nearly 3,000
people cast votes - only 347 guessed correctly. The replica
Old Master was an imitation Jean-Honore Fragonard painting, "Young
Woman," an 18th century portrait of a young woman who has dark brown
hair tied
Dr. Xavier Bray, the gallery's chief curator策展主席, says the idea wasn't to try to get gallery goers to play international art
detective but to look deeply and intently專注地 at every painting on their walls
- not just fan out 全部攤開來 to find the Canalettos(義大利畫家迦納萊托的作品), Gainsboroughs英國畫家托馬斯·庚斯博羅作品and Rembrandts荷蘭畫家林布蘭作品. "Never before have I seen
so many people actively looking at each painting," he said. "The visual
exercise of comparing and contrasting比較 will demonstrate how exciting it
is to
engage with an original work of art."
The last time a Fragonard came up for action被拿出來拍賣, it sold for $28 million. This
in China and sold for a little over a $100. Try to buy even a good
pair of shoes for that price這個價錢可能連一雙好鞋子都買不到. But does imitating an original so
cheaply make the original seem less valuable? I was prepared to be outraged生氣/不滿 when I logged into the websites上相關網站of a few of the Chinese art factories中國的仿古藝術工廠. Instead, I came close to幾乎/快要 ordering replicas
"Nighthawks" and Caillebotte's法國畫家 "Paris: A Rainy Day" because I
love looking deeply into both paintings and art prints can look flat印刷複製品視覺效果太平了. I imagine what it would be like to hang
over our cat's food bowl and tell visitors, "she thinks Renoir painted too
many dogs."
The replica could even be a reminder that real originality真正的藝術與創意 - I won't try to
stretch the word genius我不會濫用天才這個字眼 - isn't only the skills to paint with
color, words or notes, but to see something no one else does, and help it come alive.
