中英成語單元 又來啦！今天介紹的是 食物相關的英文成語 ，這些單字淺顯易懂，但是組合起來多半不是字面的意思喔。 今天的單元主角是西式粗食，說穿了不過就是一些馬鈴薯啊、起司啊、雞蛋啊、肉品與牛奶之類的東西。不過可別小看這些玩意兒，要是聽不懂這些食物的意思，甚至以字面意涵誤判，那可就糗大了。 1. 培根 Bacon to bring home the bacon 意思就是賺錢養家。 to save someone's bacon 則是指在某人有難時，即時伸出援手，解除對方危機 2. 牛肉 Beef to beef about someone 就是一 直去抱怨或是批評某人 to have a beef with someone 就是 跟某人結下樑子 或 對某人不滿 to hold a grudge  to beef up 就是 加強 的意思，如 I listen to NPR to beef up my English. Where is the beef? 牛肉在哪裡? 我記得小的時候，美國的溫蒂漢堡曾推出一個廣告，廣告中出現一個老婆婆，面對鏡頭手裡拿著一個漢堡，不過漢堡的麵包比牛肉還大塊，她就邊翻開麵包邊問這句： Where is the beef? 現在這句話講中文也通，通常都是指政客只會提出好聽的政見，實際上這些政見卻毫無實質內容。 就是這個廣告，漢堡肉比漢堡麵包要小很多。 這支廣告是1984年推出的，從此Where is the beef?這句話就流行至今。 3. 雞 Chicken to chick out 退縮(龜縮) 的意思。一個膽小鬼，英文可說是chicken. chicken feed 這個字本來的意思是指 雞飼料 ，引申為 薪資或是酬勞少的可憐 的意思 no spring chicken 就是指 青春不再 啦(非春雞） 4. 魚 Fish  I have bigger fish to fry 就是說「老子 還有更重要的事情 要幹」 a different kettle of fish 通常是指 完全離題的內容或東西 5. 漢堡與肉 Hamburgers and Meat I'm going to make hamburger/mincemeat of h...

gif - Giphy 記得之前有一回看美劇的時候， 劇中主角與毒梟有句對話是這樣的： Hey dude, now how many dead presidents do I owe you for these? 翻譯的人可能沒有搞清楚 dead presidents 指的是什麼，竟然翻譯成「 到底有幾個總統要因為我為你做這些而死 ？」 這樣的翻譯看得我一頭霧水。其實這裡面的問題出在 dead presidents 。 因為不理解才會全盤都聽錯。 Dead presidents 其實指的是 美鈔 ，因為美鈔上面印的都是死掉的總統。所以上面那句英文，正確的意思應該是： 「 這些貨(指毒品)要多少錢？ 」 另外還有一次看了一個影片，影片中有一句： ... and he was caught between the devil and the deep blue sea .  中文很直白的翻譯成， 他被卡在魔鬼與藍藍深海之間 。這樣的中文翻譯了真的等於沒有翻。其實 to be caught between the devil and the deep blue sea 意思是前有深海後有惡魔，兩者狀況都很糟，卡在中間讓人感到進退兩難 。所以上面那一句，正確的中文意思應該是： 「 當時的他感到左右為難/進退兩難。 」 學語文最怕不求甚解，犯錯沒有關係，不曉得自己錯在哪問題還比較嚴重。我們的英文學習方式重視單字記憶，對於成語卻接觸的不多，偏偏這些成語都是新聞媒體或是電影與生活中常出現的字詞。今天教練整理了26個最常出現的英文成語，並且逐一附上例句，熟悉這些常用成語，讓你將來無論是閱讀還是聽力都能突破盲點，就是比別人厲害一點。 希望能夠學習更多英文成語的同學，記得點教練之前製作的另外一份檔案 - 中英成語對照600句喔 。 下載檔案請點我 下載檔案細讀，可累積英文實力。 上面這26個英文常用成語，你看得懂幾個呢？很多成語都不是字面上的意思喔。 檔案中每一個成語都有中英文解釋與例句，幫助大家理解並且使用。 記得要記例句將來才會使用喔。 未來還會繼續增加新的成語，今天先把這26個熟記吧。
