全新一分鐘搞懂英文又來囉！同學問什麼是「政治足球」，這玩意兒跟「政治燙洋芋」又有何差別？教練中英解釋都包辦啦。

最新一期的經濟學人雜誌The Economist又報導了2022大趨勢，其中political football這個詞兒出現了很多字次。如果你經常閱讀經濟學人雜誌，就會發現他們的記者與編輯都非常喜歡使用geopolitics(地緣政治)還有political football這兩個詞。

前幾天有同學問我，那個「政治足球」political football 跟 political hot potato 「政治燙手山芋」有什麼不同？

簡單來說，這兩個名詞很不一樣喔，兩者唯一的共同點，就是都會跟政客或政治攪和在一塊兒。

先來看看英文解釋：

a political football

a problem that politicians from different or opposing parties argues about and try to use in order to get an advantage for themselves. 

簡單來說，就是不同黨派(對立的如執政黨與在野黨)的政客們，將某個議題政治化操作，然後藉此獲得符合自己的利益。

造個例句給大家看看：

The issue of vaccination suddenly became a political football before the election. 

這種情形最容易出現在選舉前，或是國家出現比較重大公共事件的時候。台灣的萊豬問題也可以是個政治足球。

Taiwan's controversial ractopamine pork has become a political football in the parliament.

接著再來看看燙手山芋是什麼。

a political hot potato

a problem or a situation that is difficult to deal with and causes a lot of disagreement.  

通常一個政治燙山芋，指的都是一個非常棘手的問題或是狀況，無論誰都無法輕易解決的問題。碰觸這類的議題其實沒有好處，所以燙手的山芋不像政治足球可以操弄，藉此獲取利益。政治燙山芋如果處理不好，後果往往不堪設想。當然除執政者或政黨之外，各種國際組織也可以用這個詞兒。像之前教練就曾在某個外國媒體看過這個標題：

對於WHO或是很多國際組織而言，台灣跟中國的問題向來就是他們的燙手山芋，這個例子夠清楚了吧。
